“Last week I joined a colleague and a school in Wakefield to deliver a day’s training on the NEW Fizzbook 10.1 and the rather special SMART Classroom Suite software.”

It was my first opportunity to really analyse the Fizzbooks along with 30 mixed primary teachers and see if their reaction warranted all the hype.

We started the session with a Fizzbook 10.1 for every teacher and asked them to switch them on.  First test passed!  We then played with the screen to turn the laptop into a tablet PC; we had a quick look at the camera and mentioned the FREE packages that come with Fizzbooks sold by education resellers.  The funky design and handle were an immediate hit and when told that they were water and drop proof (within limits) the future continued to look bright.

The Fizzbooks had been set up correctly on the school’s network and the teacher’s software had been installed before the start.  This process is more time consuming than the normal ‘set up’ for laptops and is an important step to be planned.  The school wanted to use them wirelessly and after a few settings changes the communication between the devices was very good.  However, it is another important consideration to ensure that your school’s infrastructure is robust and not simply an extension of a home style wireless network (find out more).

We played with the inbuilt pupil response system and student version of the award winning SMART Notebook.  But it was clear that the real winner was the SMART sync which took the Fizzbook into a whole new class of its own.  The teacher controls all the laptops, sends pages and web links, allows control to be transferred to pupils for all the class to watch and even shuts everything down with the touch of a few buttons – brilliant.  One touch and ‘LOOK TO THE FRONT’ appears on all temporarily disabled laptops – how did we ever train or teach without that!

I’m clearly biased…  but the training is vital as like with any new software, you need time to play and practice to avoid slow progress and frustration setting in.  It was a great start and the reaction was really positive with the booking system soon tested by staff that couldn’t wait to use them.

I’d make it rugged, as powerful and familiar as a PC with all the same software and connectivity.  I’d include a webcam and allow it to be turned into a tablet for adaptability and include some great additional software for art and music.  I’d want to be able to control all the computers in the room from mine and share screens with the class.   I’d incorporate a pupil response system to save money and keep everything on one device.  I’d take the most popular teaching environment in the country and include both a teacher and pupil version.   Finally, I’d want it to be FREE. 

The Fizzbook gives me all of this – well nearly, but even the price is still unbeatable!
